INFORMATION CENTER

The centerpiece of the foundation’s programs is the Discover the Delta Information Center, a 7,728-square-foot building that will be built along the Sacramento River at highways 12 and 160 just east of Rio Vista.

The center will serve as a gateway for visitors entering the Delta from the two busy highways.

Located on a two-acre foundation-owned site, the complex will include the information center building, parking for cars and school buses, arbor and outdoor sitting area and displays of historic agricultural equipment. A privately-owned vegetable market will also be located on the site.

The visitors will also be able to receive tourist related information about the Delta from a display of brochures, from a computer kiosk and from a docent working at the help desk.

The remaining ground floor space will include permanent and revolving interpretive displays featuring information about the Delta levees, communities, agriculture, contribution of the Chinese and more.

A Hal Schell Memorial Area will feature historic photographs of the Delta.

The second floor will contain a 100-person meeting room for nonprofit and community groups working to increase the awareness or improve the Delta.

This floor will also provide space for food preparation, offices for the foundation and volunteers.

INFORMATION CENTER PROJECT UPDATES:

View the old and classy new architect's renderings of the center building and site.

County Issues Use Permit
The Sacramento County Planning Department has issue a use permit for the site for the center. Foundation volunteers and consultants are now working on engineering drawings to complete the application for the building permit.

New Produce Stand
The owner of the property is constructing a new produce stand on part of the site. Many think that the frame of the building that is being built is actually the center. The market, which is not part of the foundation's project, is owned by Towne Enterprises. The foundation shares some site improvements with Towne. It is now known when the marketing will be completed or open.

Lease/Purchase Option Signed
Discover the Delta Foundation signed an agreement to lease two acres for 25 years for the center. The agreement, which was signed with land owner, Bruce Towne, includes an option to purchase the land for $500,000.
